In some religions, ritual music consists primarily of performances of songs by a choir/soloist, hymn singing by the congregation, and instrumental organ music. In Paganism, there is more diversity in ritual music. ...
McC @ 01/07/2009 08:53 PM : So I'm taking this class... it's a blowoff but its called American Musical Soundscapes and is taught by this woman who apparently attended Harvard like 30 years ago. It must've been some pre title-IX women's liberation bullshit that she got in because she's not really capable of forming sentences.
Anyway I'm supposed to pick a song that describes me perfectly. I'm thinkin Put a Donk on it. Any ideas?JasonHernandez @ 01/07/2009 08:52 PM : I actually really like the word "nigger", the way it's used when black people use it. It's essentially a black variation on "dude". "Hey, dude!", a white guy might say. "Hey, nigger!", a black guy might say. I think it's funny.
I would never use the word myself (without literal or figurative quotes around it) in conversation. And I'm not bothered in the slightest by the fact that I (culturally) shouldn't use it (at least in this point in time--this could change in a few generations). I mean, so what? It's not a big deal. Language and culture can be complex sometimes.
As for why it's used in songs, I don't think it has anything to do with sales viability or reputation. I think it's just a reflection on how these people TALK. I live in a racially mixed inner city neighborhood. I hear black people say "nigger" all the time. Doesn't bother me.diego21 @ 01/07/2009 08:51 PM : Vh1 lists are not perfect, they don't even seek to be so. This lists are made in order for you to spend a boring weekend learning facts and now and then, some funny comment.
Plus, its not worthy, but its understandable for Welcome to the Jungle to be #1. Anyone who considers rock to be loud seems to like this songNamey @ 01/07/2009 08:50 PM : Re: Any good jokes in the Bible?

[http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Kings%202:23-24&version=31,2 Kings 2:23-24] is funny, not really a joke though...
diego21 @ 01/07/2009 08:46 PM : Re: R.I.P., Ron Asheton I had got Fun House, quite a while ago, but somehow, I "needed" this to make me play it. Its a great album indeed, thanks Ron.Ezreal @ 01/07/2009 08:44 PM : Sorry, I didn't see that "Won't Get Fooled Again" was in a place it deserved. Shows someone knew at least a little bit of what they were doing when voting. When I looked over the list I was just so overwhelmed with the liquid sewage seeping out everywhere that I didn't notice it there. I'm also blind as a bat, which is probably more the truth.
clean_steve @ 01/07/2009 08:43 PM : Re: The Lindsey Buckingham Appreciation Society
I just got Tusk only because Kronz said it's so great with such conviction, I hope it is, I don't like throwing money away
I hope you enjoy it. Personally I think it's brilliant. 5thEye @ 01/07/2009 08:41 PM : Re: Untitled albums... I completely agree.velvet_elvis81 @ 01/07/2009 08:39 PM : Re: Predicted rating not working? What's the "recommended" bold text? Does that mean our individual recommended albums are gonna be bolded on the artist page? Because that would be excellent.Ezreal @ 01/07/2009 08:35 PM : Re: Medieval significance in Metal Music??? It's a romanticization of knights engaging in epic battles, as well as a heavy dose of mythology. Battles with dragons, Viking raiders, pale warriors with large swords (and often larger codpieces) rescuing scantily clad maidens - all male fantasy stuff. However, like the poster above me said, it is a relatively small amount of metal groups that headed in this direction. They just seemed to have the best t-shirts and album covers.
Kronz @ 01/07/2009 08:34 PM : Re: The Lindsey Buckingham Appreciation Society I don't know the answer to that, but funny you mention The Dance, I've just been listening to the DVD version. It's been 11 years or more since I saw it on TV, so it's kind of like it's new again. The versions of "Go Insane" and "Big Love" are mesmerizing. I am definitely going to be getting the DVD now.lalind @ 01/07/2009 08:34 PM : Re: I made a list of my favorite singles... I am very glad to see some of my favorites on your list as Space, The Flirts, Sweet, The Knack "My Sharona", The Shangrilas, Giorgio Moroder and more.
But we are not musically twins :) Torc @ 01/07/2009 08:34 PM : Untitled albums... I found [http://rateyourmusic.com/board_message/message_id_is_1555897_and_board_id_is_2_and_find_is_1555897#msg1555897,this] discussion about untitled tracks, which makes sense. Should the same logic be applied to untitled albums? That is, an album without a title should be called [untitled], while an album intentionally named Untitled would be capitalized without brackets.

The Musicians Today By mark321 Became a professional musician today isn't easy, and really never has been. In this era dominated by the communications, to became today a successful artist is necessary to be prepared in many ways, i.e., well-instructed artists have a better chance of success in this changing and competitive environment. Often isn't enough to be "only" a musician and this is true particularly for indie musicians whom are in charge of manufacturing, promoting, distributing and selling their records.
Many musicians in a wide range of artistic trends are taking control of their careers and they are taking advantage of it. They are realising that the major labels (and indie labels too) do not necessarily know the best way to put their out there. So in my opinion is very good that musicians take control of their music, recordings and image, because know their own music and very often the great and innovatives ideas are wasted because of label politics or they simply are not understood.
Of course, independent is not new at all, but it has turned out an increasing practice by many talented musicians around the world. In this digital era, the resources used in creating and distributing are cheaper than in past decades. Today, they haven't problems to turn their musical ideas into professional recordings, so these problems already do not exist. Now, it's not necessary to get a
record deal to begin a musical career what music industry people think that the market offers more than people need. I do not agree with that idea and I think that's not a bad thing, because allow many more alternatives for listeners that don't like the "product" that record companies are prepared to give.
By "other side", as those filters don't exist, many go live with not enough good management, but everybody is free regarding what to buy or not to buy (...or simply what to listen).
