Devil Doll to me really are teetering on the edge between experimental rock and experimental metal. The guitars (albeit rarely prominent) have a certain aesthetic of metal music even if they aren't particularly that heavy or chaotic. The vocals have that "I am the lord of insert generic ominous name of place" attitude and it's all a bit dark. Can't really put my finger on why but to me they are metal.
