Black clothes, blue paint, latex and bald caps is all what we can see on stage, of friends Chris Wink, Matt Goldman and Phil Stanton making this uniquely artistic Blue Man Groupe. Starting off in 1980s in the New York City, presenting their unusual self to the general public on the streets, provided this group the initial ignition. Unusual events like the Funeral of the 80s, The Alien Comic in The Club at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. They were assigned by the director here with a full length show. The group won CMP an Obie Award and also Lucille Lortel Award and this helped make the show go off board. This show Tubes was then performed in Astro Place Theatre, and new grounds were explored by the audience of a remarkable
and performance sense. Props, audience participation, and loads of paper- became a landmark in the performance of the group. Plastic drapery kind of curtains were introduced to save the audience from the food andpaints etc being thrown at each other by the group during the performance. Humor, energy and satire on the prevalent norms in the modern society are the key indicators to what they perform. During their performance, they include the audience with comments to them meanwhile and this keeps all active and into the show at all times. Instruments used during the performance are not invented by them, but always used in a unique way to give the feel of the sound, they wish to convey to their audience. This sound is always different in every show and helps them and the audience has a different feel every time. The instruments mainly used are PVC, Tubulum, Airpoles, Drumbone, Drumulum, Hammered Dulcimer and Cimbalom, Chapman stick, Zither, Dogulum, Piano Smasher, Shaker Gong, Gyno Shot, Aronophhonic and Electric Dog Toy.
Their first album was launched as Audio in 1999 and they participated in Mobby’s area to tour in 2002, with a much improved Rock performance. The group appeared in the Simpsons, an animated TV series and also appeared in the Drew Carey Show as guests, and also in an information video in Mc Carren International airport in Las Vegas. They are also parodied in the Family Guy movie and termed as the ‘Jew Man Group’ and also mentioned in the TV series ‘Angels’. In 2004, the group performed in the Las Vegas Show, in the episode ‘Blood and Sand’ as well.
