Christmas carol songs are almost synonymous to the festival of lights and seem to form an integral part of Christmas celebrations. In fact no Christmas celebrations can be considered to be complete without these Christmas carol songs. Thus, it should not be a great surprise that the history of these Christmas carol songs date back to 300s and are about 1,700 years old.
The first Christmas carol song was composed by Aurelius Prudentius having the name ‘Of the Father's Love Begotten’. Since then great number of Christmas carol songs covering every aspect of the festival of lights have been composed. Many famous musicians as well as common people have contributed to this list of carols.
The Renaissance period brought many carols as composed by Italians as well as by St Francis of Assisi into limelight. The carols gained more popularity when in the year 1447, Johannes Gutenberg formed his press. With

the puritans coming into power in England, the popularity of Christmas carol songs got a little dim. Some of the Carol sheets were even burned during the years 1649 to 1660.
The carols again gained popularity in the year 1742 with George Frederich Handel performing the carol ‘the Messiah’ in Ireland. Since then, every Christmas season brought along various Christmas carol songs that added a special tinge to the Christmas celebrations.
