The alt/rock band Petroleum causes controversy with new war themed music video

2 January 2004--The pre-release of Alternative/metal rock band Petroleum's new music video, titled "Media Deconstruction" causes split reaction amongst die hard fans.

The video which depicts protest over the US/ IRAQ war has resulted in negative feedback from some of the bands most loyal fans.

Negative letters from fans and media reviewers have prompted the band to tell their side of the story.

Singer/guitarist frontman Braden, issued this statement, he said "This video was never meant to convey a message that we are unpatriotic or against war in general. We merely wanted to state that part of living in a free society gives you the right to question your government's choices on important issues. If you were an IRAQI citizen, you would never be able to do this without serious consequence. My own personal reason for writing this song was that I felt like the truth, or the real reasons for wanting to go to war with IRAQ were not being told. The media was being used to keep the public informed with what ever they were told to say. Myself and the other members of the band are not against war, sometimes it is necessary to protect our freedom and way of life. One thing we do agree on is that war should always be the alternative, and every means possible should be explored to resolve the issue before going to war. In addition, our government should never lie to the people when it comes to a decision like this. We appreciate and support our troop's efforts, we hope for their safety and quick return to our country."

Coincidently the reason why the band claims to have made this video was from the feedback of their younger fans. Braden says, "A lot of youth today feel like they are being lied to in one form or another, especially on this issue. We go into a lot of chat rooms and message boards, and this is the general feeling we got. It seamed appropriate that we have a chorus that shouts out; blatant lies! the kids can really relate to that."
