San Francisco Still An American Icon

With over fifteen million visitors a year, San Francisco ranks as one of Americas favourite vacation destinations. But it wasnt until recently, while researching a travel itinerary of my own, that I realized how iconic San Francisco really is for the American psyche. Weve seen or heard the city portrayed so many times in music, movies, or commercials that a lot of these pictures and sounds are now lastingly linked to our image of the city.
Some popular song tunes illustrate this point quite well. For those of us who regard San Francisco as a romantic destination, it may well be because of Italian crooner Tony Bennetts signature number, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". Bennett, whose real name is Anthony Benedetto, was born in Astoria, Queens in New York City. Bennetts first big break came when Pearl Bailey asked him to open her number at a Greenwich Village nightclub in the late 1940s. Bennett soon signed with Columbia Records, launching a singing career that would only grow in popularity as the Fifties rolled on.
Tony Bennett recorded and released "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" at the height of his popularity in the year 1962. At first, this Ballad of the Bay met with only modest success, topping out at #19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But the tune did well enough on other charts to eventually become a gold record. It even was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Record and Top Male Vocal.
Notwithstanding Bennetts achievement with "I Left My Heart in San Francisco", the singers fortunes took a turn for the worse when the Beatles and other British musical groups first invaded and then conquered America's pop music scene in the mid-1960s. Embedded in Iraq
The embed had proved surprisingly easy to arrange. No one had objected to the three New York Review articles I had sent in as samples of my work. As it turned out, Bennetts singing career would outlive that of Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead. Remarkably, the performer got a new lease on life in the late 1980s by finding a voice for younger crowds saturated with disco, punk and new wave tunes. Bookings on Letterman, Conan OBrien and a duet with the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the MTV Video Music Awards gave the Italian crooner a newer, much hipper image.
Today in his early eighties, Bennett continues to tour and perform, delighting crowds with smooth renditions of "Fly Me to the Moon" and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco". The Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts have designated Bennetts homage to the City on the Bay as one of the most important songs of the twentieth century.
